Where your family will run into ChatGPT
Most families meet ChatGPT through the free consumer tier at chatgpt.com on a phone, laptop, or a school-issued device that has not been locked down. That consumer tier — not the separately licensed ChatGPT Edu product — is what SafeGradeAI evaluated.
What our evaluation tells parents
ChatGPT's consumer tiers were designed for adults and only added teen-specific protections in late 2025 following high-profile tragedies. If you allow your teen (13+) to use ChatGPT, consider linking your account via parental controls at chatgpt.com/parent-resources, enabling time limits, and reviewing activity. Turn off model training in Settings. ChatGPT is highly engaging and can feel emotionally supportive in ways that may substitute for real human connection. For children under 13, use is prohibited.
Your setup checklist
- Confirm your teen is at least 13; OpenAI prohibits under-13 accounts but verifies age only by self-reported birthdate.
- Link a parent account through OpenAI's parental controls (launched September 2025) so you can set quiet hours, restrict content, and receive safety notifications.
- Open Settings > Data Controls and turn off model training — on the consumer tiers, conversations are used for training by default.
- Turn off memory and custom personas for younger teens; persistent memory is what makes the assistant feel like a relationship rather than a tool.
- Decide together whether voice mode is allowed. Voice conversations are the most immersive surface and the hardest to review afterwards.
Conversations worth having
- "If ChatGPT ever gives you advice about hurting yourself or someone else, you come to me first — the model is not a counselor."
- "It sounds confident even when it is wrong. What is the fastest way for you to check a claim it makes?"
- "What are you allowed to use it for in each class?" Academic-integrity rules differ by teacher.
- "It is not a friend. It is a text predictor that is very good at sounding like one."
Warning signs to watch for
- Late-night sessions or reluctance to show you a conversation.
- Describing the assistant as someone who "understands" them better than people do.
- Homework quality that jumps suddenly while the ability to explain the work does not.
- Emotional distress after a conversation, especially around mental-health topics.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT safe for a 10-year-old?+
No. OpenAI's own terms set a 13+ minimum and SafeGradeAI rates ChatGPT not recommended for ages 5-8 and 9-12. There is no child mode on the consumer tiers.
Do OpenAI's parental controls actually stop unsafe conversations?+
They add time limits, content restrictions, and notifications, but they are opt-in and require both parent and teen to link accounts. They do not add age verification, and a teen can create an unlinked account with a different email.
Is ChatGPT allowed in schools?+
Consumer ChatGPT Free and Plus do not come with a FERPA data processing agreement or an admin console, so SafeGradeAI does not recommend them for student use. ChatGPT Edu is a separate institutional product with different terms.
Are our conversations used to train the model?+
On the consumer tiers, yes, by default. You can opt out in Settings > Data Controls; the setting is not on by default.
