ChatGPT Age Guide

OpenAI sets a minimum age of 13 — or the local digital-consent age where that is higher — and requires parent or guardian permission for anyone under 18. Since August 18, 2026, users whose age is declared or estimated as 13-17 are automatically placed into ChatGPT for Teens, a teen experience with stronger default protections. SafeGradeAI's guidance below is stricter than the policy minimum in places, because a policy minimum is not the same as a developmental fit.

Ages 5-8 — Not recommended

Open-ended conversational AI is a poor fit at this age. Children cannot reliably separate generated text from fact, and there is no child mode with a constrained content universe. OpenAI itself says ChatGPT is not meant for under-13s and that any under-13 educational interaction should be conducted by an adult. Use curated, closed-content learning tools instead.

Ages 9-12 — Not recommended for independent use

Below the platform minimum. If an adult is driving the session for a specific purpose — explaining a science idea, generating spelling practice — the risk is manageable, but the adult holds the account and the child never uses it alone.

Ages 13-15 — Supervised use, on their own teen account

Now within the platform's terms with your permission. The single most important setup step is that the teen signs up with their real age so the teen experience applies; an adult-aged account silently removes those protections. At this age the meaningful risks are accuracy (confident wrong answers), over-reliance for schoolwork, and emotionally loaded conversations a chatbot is not qualified to handle. Keep use in shared spaces, link parental controls, and agree quiet hours.

Ages 16-18 — Structured independent use

Most students at this age can use ChatGPT productively for study support. The remaining work is judgement rather than supervision: verifying sources, disclosing AI assistance in schoolwork, recognising when a conversation should be with a human, and understanding what the account retains.

Settings to change at every age

• Sign up with the student's real age so the 13-17 teen experience applies.
• Link parental controls and set quiet hours — and be clear with your teen that this does not let you read their conversations.
• Switch off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data Controls. Temporary Chat is not used for training.
• Review memory entries periodically and clear anything personal.
• Give the teen their own eligible account rather than sharing an adult's — account sharing conflicts with OpenAI's terms and removes the teen protections.
