The questions below are the ones that come up most often in SafeGradeAI parent sessions and school briefings. Answers separate what OpenAI documents from what SafeGradeAI assesses.
Safety and age
Vendor-documented: ChatGPT's minimum age is 13, or the local digital-consent age where higher, and under-18s need parent or guardian permission. OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for under-13s. Since August 18, 2026, users whose age is declared or estimated as 13-17 are placed into ChatGPT for Teens with stronger default protections.
SafeGradeAI assessment: supervised use for 13-15, structured independent use for 16-18, not recommended below 13. Our overall score is 52/100 — Not Recommended — because age assurance is weak and moderation is generic rather than child-tuned.
Parental controls
Vendor-documented: a linked parent can manage selected settings and quiet hours. Parental controls do not give parents access to the teen's conversations.
SafeGradeAI assessment: treat them as guardrails, not monitoring. They also do nothing if the teen holds a second, unlinked account.
Privacy
Vendor-documented: consumer chats may be used to improve models depending on settings; "Improve the model for everyone" can be switched off in Data Controls, and chats may still remain in history. Temporary Chat is not used for training. ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu inputs and outputs are not used for model training by default.
SafeGradeAI assessment: for school deployments, an education or enterprise agreement with a data processing addendum is the only configuration we consider appropriate for student data.
Accuracy
Vendor-documented: OpenAI states that ChatGPT can produce incorrect facts and fabricated citations and that important claims should be verified.
SafeGradeAI assessment: teach verification explicitly and repeatedly, not as a one-off warning.
Academic integrity
Vendor-documented: OpenAI says AI-content detectors have not been reliable enough to base high-stakes judgements about students on.
SafeGradeAI assessment: schools get better outcomes from clear per-subject rules, disclosure expectations, and assessment design that surfaces process — drafts, oral defence, in-class writing — than from detection.
Classroom use
Where a school has an appropriate agreement, the strongest uses are teacher-side: differentiation, lesson planning, feedback drafting, and practice-set generation. Student-facing use should be purposeful, time-boxed, and visible.

Is ChatGPT safe for kids?+
It is not designed for children, and OpenAI says it is not meant for under-13s. For 13-17 year olds on a correctly-aged account, the teen experience, parental controls, training turned off, and clear household rules make it manageable with supervision.
Does ChatGPT store what my child types?+
Conversations are retained and memory can persist details across sessions. Switch off 'Improve the model for everyone' in Data Controls, use Temporary Chat for anything sensitive, and clear memory regularly.
Can schools use ChatGPT with student data?+
Only under an education or enterprise agreement with a data processing addendum and after a local privacy review. Business, Enterprise and Edu data is not used for model training by default; consumer accounts are not appropriate for student data.
Does ChatGPT block inappropriate content?+
It refuses a wide range of harmful requests, and the 13-17 teen experience applies stronger defaults, but filters are generic rather than child-tuned and can be circumvented. Supervision remains necessary.
