Conditions before students touch it

- Confirm your teen is at least 13; OpenAI prohibits under-13 accounts but verifies age only by self-reported birthdate.
- Link a parent account through OpenAI's parental controls (launched September 2025) so you can set quiet hours, restrict content, and receive safety notifications.
- Open Settings > Data Controls and turn off model training — on the consumer tiers, conversations are used for training by default.
- Turn off memory and custom personas for younger teens; persistent memory is what makes the assistant feel like a relationship rather than a tool.
- Decide together whether voice mode is allowed. Voice conversations are the most immersive surface and the hardest to review afterwards.

By November 2025, OpenAI was defending against at least five wrongful-death lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT failed to apply safe-messaging guidelines during conversations with minors in acute distress. The most widely reported case involved 16-year-old Adam Raine. OpenAI's November 2025 legal defense — arguing the teen 'violated Terms of Service' by discussing self-harm — was widely criticized. In response, OpenAI partnered with 170+ mental health experts and in October 2025 released an update reducing unsafe responses by 65-80% (per OpenAI's own measurement).

ChatGPT Free and Plus are powerful general-purpose tools for adults. For minors, these consumer tiers carry unacceptable risk: safeguards were added reactively after documented teen deaths, parental controls require active opt-in, and no age verification exists. Parents who allow teen use should link accounts, disable training, set time limits. Schools should not deploy the consumer tiers. Until OpenAI implements mandatory age verification, automatic under-18 safeguards, and independent third-party audits, the consumer product should be treated as adult-only.

Do OpenAI's parental controls actually stop unsafe conversations?+

Is ChatGPT allowed in schools?+
