Product overview
How Anthropic Claude works
Anthropic's Claude is a leading frontier LLM chatbot built by a safety-focused AI lab, with strong published policies, an industry-leading Constitutional AI approach to moderation, and unusually transparent model documentation. However, Anthropic's own consumer terms require users to be 18+, the product is not designed for children, and there is no COPPA-compliant K-12 product for under-13 students. Claude for Education is aimed at higher education, not K-12. For SafeGradeAI purposes it is not recommended for direct student use in K-12; it is a reasonable adult tool for educators when used under district policy.
Student usage
Not permitted for under-18 users on consumer Claude.ai per Terms of Service
Modality

Five evaluation categories from the SafeGradeAI rubric. Each shows the rubric score, evaluator confidence, and (where documented) analysis, strengths, and concerns.
Strengths & concerns
Detailed pros & concerns
Strengths
- Industry-leading safety research posture (Constitutional AI, Responsible Scaling Policy, published model cards).
- Strong published privacy stance: no training on consumer chats by default, ZDR option for enterprise, SOC 2 / ISO 27001 / ISO 42001 / HIPAA-eligible.
- Unusually transparent about capabilities, limits, and misuse policies for a frontier lab.
- High-quality outputs with strong refusals on clearly harmful requests.
Concerns
- Consumer ToS requires users to be 18+ — not appropriate for direct K-12 student use.
- No COPPA-compliant K-12 offering and no FERPA school-official DPA marketed for K-12 districts.
- No child-facing safeguards: no parental controls, no kid-mode, no session limits, no simplified reading level.
- Adult-oriented content (mature themes, ambiguous mental-health discussions) is gated for adults, not blocked for minors who may access it anyway.
- Powerful capabilities (code, essays, research) raise academic-integrity risk when used without teacher framing.
Guidance at a glance
Recommendations for parents, teachers, and administrators
Parent guidance
Do not let children under 18 use Claude.ai on your account — it violates Anthropic's Terms of Service and there are no child safeguards. If your teen (16–17) needs an LLM for homework help, prefer a school-provisioned option under a data agreement instead, and sit with them the first few sessions. Turn off "Help improve Claude" in Settings › Privacy so chats are not used for training.
Classroom-use recommendation
Do not assign Claude.ai directly to K-12 students — the ToS requires users to be 18+ and there is no COPPA/FERPA-aligned K-12 offering. Teachers may use Claude as a personal planning/prep assistant (lesson drafts, rubric ideas, differentiation) under district AI policy, but must strip student PII before pasting and treat outputs as drafts, not authoritative content. If a district wants classroom-facing access, wait for a K-12 product or use a vendor-managed classroom LLM that offers a signed DPA.
School policy recommendation
Policy recommendation for K-12 administrators: block direct student access to Claude.ai on managed networks and devices; permit staff use for administrative and instructional-prep purposes only, under an AUP that requires (1) no student PII in prompts, (2) human review of all outputs, and (3) disclosure when AI was used to generate materials. Do not sign an enterprise agreement expecting FERPA coverage — Anthropic's current DPA and Trust Center commitments are enterprise-grade but not marketed as FERPA school-official terms for K-12. Reassess if Anthropic launches a K-12 product with a signed DPA and age-appropriate defaults.
