How Perplexity works
Perplexity is a consumer AI answer engine that combines an LLM with real-time web search and inline citations. Source-grounded answers make it stronger than most chatbots for information literacy, but the consumer product is built for adults: there is no age verification, no parental controls, and no COPPA-aligned data handling. Perplexity for Enterprise offers a DPA, SOC 2 Type II, and data-training opt-out, but the free/Pro consumer tiers are not appropriate for children and are not designed for K-12 district deployment.

Parent guidance
Perplexity's cited answers can be genuinely useful for teen homework and information literacy — students can (and should) click through to the underlying sources. But Perplexity was not designed for children: there is no parental dashboard, no way to disable the Discover feed or image generation, and the platform can surface adult, political, or graphic content in the course of ordinary searches. If you allow a teen (13+) to use Perplexity, create the account together, turn off "AI Data Retention" in Settings, avoid Comet and Spaces sharing, and treat it as a supervised research tool rather than a chat companion. Children under 13 should not use it.
Classroom-use recommendation
Not recommended for whole-class or under-13 use. For grades 9-12 research units it can be introduced as a citation-literacy exercise — under teacher supervision, students compare Perplexity's cited sources against primary documents to learn source evaluation, never to generate finished work.
School policy recommendation
School and district IT should not deploy consumer Perplexity (Free or Pro) for student use. The consumer product does not offer a FERPA DPA, admin console, SSO/SCIM, per-user audit logging, or the data-processing agreements required by state student-data-privacy laws (SOPPA, SOPIPA, NY Ed Law 2-d, CA AB 1584). Perplexity for Enterprise is the only tier that provides SOC 2 Type II, a DPA, SSO, and training opt-out — evaluate that tier separately if adoption is being considered for staff (not students). Multiple US states now require formal district AI policies before deployment (e.g. Ohio's July 1, 2026 mandate); the consumer tiers cannot meet those requirements.
