Both tools are general-purpose assistants students use for the same tasks, but they arrive very differently: ChatGPT usually arrives as a consumer account a student already has, while Gemini for Education usually arrives through a Google Workspace domain an administrator already controls. That difference — not model quality — is what most school decisions turn on.

Personal accounts vs school accounts

This is the distinction families get wrong most often. Gemini on a personal Google account is not the same product as Gemini in a Workspace for Education school account. Google documents that for Workspace for Education school accounts, Gemini chats and files are not human-reviewed and are not used to improve generative AI models, with enterprise-grade protections and admin-managed access including under-18 guardrails. A student's personal Gmail account gets consumer terms instead.

ChatGPT has the same split: consumer Free and Plus versus ChatGPT Edu / Enterprise, where inputs and outputs are not used for model training by default.

Administrative control (vendor-documented)

Gemini for Education inherits Workspace admin controls, domain-level data handling, and existing student account governance. Consumer ChatGPT accounts have none of that; the equivalent requires an education or enterprise agreement.

Data handling defaults (vendor-documented)

Workspace for Education school-account Gemini data is not used to improve generative AI models. Consumer ChatGPT may use chats for model improvement depending on settings, though "Improve the model for everyone" can be switched off and Temporary Chat is excluded.

Age and access

ChatGPT is 13+ with parental permission under 18, with a 13-17 teen experience since August 2026. Gemini access for under-18 school users is managed by the district administrator, and Google applies under-18 guardrails to education accounts. Neither tool is built for young children.

Which to choose

• A school already on Google Workspace: Gemini for Education is the lower-governance-cost option and the easier one to defend in a privacy review.
• A family at home with a teenager: the choice matters less than the supervision around it; on ChatGPT use a correctly-aged teen account with linked parental controls.
• A school with no domain-level agreement: neither should be used with student data until an agreement exists.

Accuracy

Both tools can be fluently wrong and can misattribute sources. OpenAI documents this limitation explicitly for ChatGPT, and Google documents it for Gemini. Verification has to be taught as a classroom and household routine in either deployment.

• Gemini for Education: a Workspace administrator turns Gemini on or off per organisational unit, so access can be governed by year group, and Google applies additional guardrails to under-18 education users.
• ChatGPT: consumer accounts have no district admin surface at all. Equivalent control requires a ChatGPT Edu or Enterprise agreement with a signed data processing addendum.

Under-13 learners

Neither tool is designed for under-13 students. Use a purpose-built K-5 education tool instead, and keep general-purpose assistants for older students under supervision.
