SchoolAI Parent Guide: What Families Should Know

If your child's school uses SchoolAI, they most likely access it through the Student Portal, where they can use "Sidekick" (a general assistant) or complete teacher-assigned "Spaces" (structured activities built by a teacher for a specific lesson or task). How student access works

SchoolAI is provisioned and configured by schools and districts, not purchased directly by families in most cases. According to SchoolAI's Student Portal overview, teachers assign Spaces and configure what students can do; students do not have unrestricted access to an open AI chatbot.

What vendor documentation says about oversight

• Teachers see everything. SchoolAI states all Sidekick activity is visible to teachers — there is no private, teacher-invisible chat mode for students.
• Critical Alerts. SchoolAI's system is designed to flag concerning interactions — including safety and well-being signals — to educators in real time, per the Critical Alerts article.
• District guardrails. Administrators can set guardrails that apply across a school or district, adding a layer of control above individual teacher settings.
• Not designed as a "friend." SchoolAI states Dot, its assistant, is designed not to act like a human friend and not to optimize for engagement over student well-being — a relevant distinction from consumer companion-style chatbots.

Questions to ask your child's school

• Who reviews Critical Alerts when they're triggered, and how quickly?
• What Spaces has my child been assigned, and for which subjects?
• Has the district signed a current Data Processing Agreement with SchoolAI?
• Are any AI providers used by SchoolAI in our district contractually barred from training on student data? (SchoolAI states this is standard, but confirming locally is still worthwhile.)

What SafeGradeAI recommends

• Ask your school for a copy of, or summary of, its SchoolAI configuration — particularly which Spaces and grade-level content are enabled for your child.
• Talk with your child about the fact that a teacher can see their SchoolAI conversations; this is a feature, not a bug, and worth discussing openly.
