Framework analysis
Five evaluation categories from the SafeGradeAI rubric. Each shows the rubric score, evaluator confidence, and (where documented) analysis, strengths, and concerns.
Strengths & concerns
Detailed pros & concerns
Strengths
- Strong Google safety filter stack and published model cards
- Family Link accounts disable model training by default
- 'Double-check with Google' grounds claims against live search
- Clear data controls: activity toggle, 3/18/36-month retention
Concerns
- Consumer chats default to being used for training unless disabled
- Human raters may review sampled conversations
- Hallucinations still occur; citations are inconsistent outside Deep Research
- Easy for teens to sign up outside a Family Link account
Guidance at a glance
Recommendations for parents, teachers, and administrators
Parent guidance
Reasonable for teens 13+ who have a Family Link-managed Google Account, where training use is off by default. Turn off Gemini Apps Activity on personal accounts to keep chats out of training. Talk about hallucinations and cross-checking sources; not a substitute for tutoring on graded work.
Classroom-use recommendation
Not intended as a classroom-provisioned tool. Teachers should use Gemini for Education under a Workspace tenant instead, which offers admin controls, DPA coverage, and no training on tenant data. Consumer Gemini in class raises data-boundary and account-terms issues.
School policy recommendation
For school use, deploy Gemini for Education under Workspace, not consumer Gemini. Consumer accounts fall outside your DPA and education data boundary. If students access consumer Gemini on personal devices, cover it in your AUP and academic-integrity policy.
