How Duolingo Max works
Duolingo Max is the premium AI tier of Duolingo, layering GPT-4 Turbo-powered Roleplay and Video Call features on top of the gamified lesson loop. The AI scenarios are tightly scoped to real-world language tasks, which meaningfully limits off-topic outputs. However, audio and transcript data from AI conversations are retained and used to train Duolingo's own models, the platform has declined to sign student data privacy agreements required by many US districts, and its heavy gamification mechanics raise engagement-design concerns for minors.

Duolingo Max is a well-regarded language learning tool with genuine educational value, and its AI conversation features are more constrained than general-purpose chatbots. Parents of children under 13 should be aware that COPPA protections exist but the app sends a parental notification rather than requiring upfront consent. For teens (13+), audio recordings of AI conversations are retained for model training. The streak and leaderboard mechanics are deliberately habit-forming and can cause anxiety.
Classroom-use recommendation
Not recommended as a primary classroom tool for under-13 learners; for grades 8-12 world-language classes, it is acceptable as optional at-home practice under a school-managed account. Keep AI Roleplay and Video Call features off school devices unless the district has vetted the GPT-4 data-processing terms.
School policy recommendation
Two structural barriers: Duolingo has been documented (as of April 2026) as declining to sign the student DPAs that most US districts require. Second, Duolingo for Schools is being sunset on July 31, 2027. Duolingo Max itself lacks FERPA compliance documentation, and AI conversation data retention is inconsistent with most district policies.
